    Dan's Tech Tips:
First I wish to clear up any confusion regarding a statement I made last week in
reference to flash drive removal.
A reader reminded me that using the "safely remove" option in the notification
area
is the best way to take out a flash drive or other portable USB portable device.
I had mentioned in the article about using the NVDA USB stick, using the "safely
remove" option wasn't necessary.
It is true that in most cases using the "safely remove" option is the best way
to
remove a USB portable device in the case of a stick with a program you close
before
removing it does the same thing.
For example,
Before taking out the NVDA USB stick, you should press cap-locks plus the letter
q.
Then press the letter y for yes.
If you use a system access USB portable drive, the same is true.
You should press insert or cap-locks plus f4 to close System Access.
Then take out the stick.
So I hope this clears any wrong information I may have communicated.
Now on with today.
Recently several members emailed me off list asking how to find the control
panel
and computer icons in Windows Seven.
They specifically wanted to delete a program from the control panel.
They also wanted to access the drives on their computer as previously done via
"my
computer."computer icon Below is what I found to work on my new HP G60 Series
Laptop
running Windows Seven's newest version.
This article will cover placing the "computer"icon previously called "my
computer"
and "control panel" on the desktop.
In Vista these are already on my wife's hp laptop.
The steps for doing this is not necessary in Vista since the icons are already
on
the desktop.
In Windows Seven these icons are in other menus and in my opinion hard to
locate.
I used Window-eyes, JAWS and System Access during my practice run and developing
this article.
This is not to say my way is the only way.
But it did work easily.
Placing A Computer Icon On Your Desktop For Ease Of Locating:
1. Press the start button.
2. Tab once and you should land on the name of your computer.
In my case it says "g60 series."
3. Arrow down until locating "computer.
4. Press the application key found three keys from the right side of the
spacebar.
5. Arrow down to "show on desktop."
If it does not say "show on desktop checked" then this option is not on.
If this option is not on, press enter.
II. Placing the Control Panel On The Desktop:
1. Press the start button.
2. Tab once and you land on the name of your computer.
In my case it says, "g60 series."
3. Arrow down to "control panel."
3. Press the application key.
4. Arrow down to "show on desktop."
If you do not here "show on desktop checked," press enter to check this option
on.
