FuseProject's Free Glasses Program
FuseProject, a company led by Yves Behar, has been working with the
Mexican government to create glasses for young children with vision
problems and distribute them for free, a project called "See Better to
Learn Better." The project strives to not only make glasses available
to as many children as possible, but also make them look good enough
for the kids to actually want to wear them. Their goal is to give away
nearly three hundred thousand pairs of glasses.
The glasses themselves are an interesting design. There are five
styles to choose from, ranging from "sporty to nerdy." According to
Behar, "The glasses then say, 'I am unique. I am the only one with
these particular glasses." This makes it so that more kids will want
to wear the glasses, as they will be looked at as a trendy accessory,
rather than exude the stigma that glasses tend to give off in the
social circles of Mexican children.
The glasses are completely customizable, and are offered in five
styles, with seven color choices and three size options. The glasses
come in two pieces, so that the color piece can be changed and the
lenses can be swapped out easily when an updated prescription is
necessary. The frames are also nearly unbreakable and are made of a
new polymer called Gilamid.
By establishing this new design that allows complete customization of
the glasses, there is a much greater chance that this project will be
highly successful among the children they aim to help. By distributing
them for free, they also entirely eliminate any sort of financial
barriers as well. Hopefully very soon, hundreds of thousands of
children will be able to see clearly once again.
