[access-uk] Re: zoom h1 worth it?

But he also explained that, annoyingly, the menus toggle round so counting wouldn't help much.

I've heard the quality of the h1 and the olympus and I can't tell a lot of difference. Can someone here be a bit more specific as to why they think the H1 is better?

Much appreciated.

Granted, the auto gain isn't particularly quick to adjust, but as to the question of preamp noise Neil Ewers remarked on how quiet it was. It was far quieter than either the Edirol r-09HR and the H2. As for setting bit rate he explined that too. You use the forward and back buttons while in record pause. As long as the bit rate has a default, and doesn't stay where you last set it you'd just count presses. Remember too that the DM5 is not sold on recording quality, but on the Daisy and voice feedback. It is classed as a dictaphone. At the end of the day though it's going to be a case of suck it and see.

I heard plenty of hiss in the background on Neal Ewers podcast though. Also, the auto levels on the zoom H1 are shockingly bad - they take ages to recover after a loud bang or microphone pop and seemingly, depending on the ambient noise in the room, I'm not entirely sure it always does recover.

Whereas the autolevels on the Olympus DM5, as demoed by neal Ewers, had remarkably good autolevels.

And just harping back to the Zoom H1, Neal Ewers warned that you can knock it into a different recording mode, say between 64kbs up to 128kbs quality. That doesn't sound like an accessible recorder to me because there's no way a blind person can know it's happened until they listen back to the recording later.

Any thoughts on this and I'd really like to hear.

Hi Will, listen to the Neil Ewers podcast on blind cool tech. He demos it pretty well. As far as comparison with the DM5 goes, judging from the demo of it that Tony posted to the list the recording quality is far superior on the H1. It all depends on what you want it for. If you want it as a recorder then the H1. If you want it for listening to daisy books and doing a similar job to the stream then the DM5. Only you can decide.

Hi, I am doing an interpreting course, and I have been told I can record the classes if I wish as it is mainly lecture-based. Is the zoom recorder good the h1? Are they as good as the dm5's? I know the h1 has no menu system so how easy is it to use?
Will
