Hi Andy,
This is one of these infuriating things which we call,
"McGillicuddy's Law".
Is the noise there as soon as it is switched on, or does it
start at some specific point later? This could be
important.
If it's as loud as you say, then it simply MUST be
traceable. However, I suspect it is going to require some
sighted assistance from someone with a good ear, and the
expertise to remove the PC cover.
The ideal solution would be to invite your local GP over for
dinner, and ask that they bring their stethoscope and a
screwdriver along.
The noise is coming from somewhere, you just have to find
out where.

PS: Oh yes, "McGillicuddy's Law". Heard that from a Boston
Taxi driver when, after every traffic light turned red on
us, I said something about it being "Murphy's Law" when I
was rushing to an airport.
We don't have "Murphy's Law in Boston, we have
McGillicuddy's Law", he said. "What's that?", I asked.
"Murphy was an [expletive deleted] optimist!", he replied.
