Carol, I think it's just that if a phone is branded to a network such as Vodafone, it isn't easy to upgrade the firmware because it's coded. I'm sure Steve said something recently somewhere about not being able to upgrade firmware if the phone is branded.

I can tell you though that unlocking a phone can range from between £7 and £10, unless you send it away to the network it is locked to, who will do it. They charge an arm and a leg though, anything between £20 and £30. My son has this phone, and it's fairly new, so you would need to make sure it can be unlocked at the moment. I would also be tempted to advise youto take it to a local shop if there is one around who will do it. We've got a guy in Kirkcaldy who does all that sort of stuff, whichis useful if I needed that done. Good luck.
