Ray, the only problem is with Virgin Media, they will not provide routers, only cable modems,

Hi Ray,

I get upload speeds of 768KB.

I don't know what the maximum speed is, but when my sister got 20MB, they
had to bring her out a new cable modem, so the modems are obviously getting better too. I really don't like DSL, because it is like dial-up unless you have a router. You have to have a dial-up profile for it, even though it is Broadband, and it is wont to disconnect sometimes. You never get that with cable, since the modem holds the connection even if all the PCs in the house
are switched off. Long live cable!

All the best

Steve

Ok, Steve, point taken, (smile). Could just be in my situation I could get
that sort of speed were I prepared to pay for it, but by no means certain.
By the way, what's the upload speed like?

I also wonder whether VM is set to offer speeds greater than 20Mbs due to
the virtues of optical fibre? Or, is there some limitation in their system
that wouldn't allow this?

Cheers,

Hi Ray,

Not impressive? See my previous message. My sister is on a 20MB download
speed, and gets about 15 MB out of that with Broadband tests. I am on 10MB,
as businesses are always behind with VM, and I regularly get 9 MB.
Because
I am over a mile from my exchange, I would only get 2MB max with DSL.

All the best

Steve

Yes indeed Billy. I get loads of stuff through the door now exstolling the virtues of a Virgin opical connection. Thing is, the speeds on offer don't
seem that impressive at the moment, though they make much of the fact the
distance from the exchange doesn't matter.

Hi Billy

I don't like capping either, but for a fiver a month, I can't see
even us
three using 40GB.

We have Telewest in our area, which is the equivalent. Haven't
looked
into their prices lately. I know with Sky that we need a BT
landline for
the ADSL service.

Jackie, don't you have Virgin Media in your area?.

I must admit it has been years since I first looked into Sky, and
that
time it was pretty expensive, and you had to have a BT line going
into
your home.
Don't you need such a BT line anymore?.

The only thing I don't like about Sky broadband, is the monthly
cap.
With Virgin Media there is no monthly capping, Billy
