Joe and everyone,

Thanks for your help.  I decided to change to com1 and it now works fine.

The only thing I now need to do is to  see if the display will show grade
two instead of grade one braille.

Hello David,

does this power braille support USB and serial?  are you using a usb
to serial adapter?  I'd go for com1 at any rate.  It's likely, but
not definite that if you have a serial communications port affixed to
the main board on your machine, it's a fair guess that it's com1 but
not a certainty.  Take a look in system, hardware, device manager,
ports com lpt you can see which ports are listed there.
