There are no home owners annual taxes over there in Britain? If there are, what happens if a person decides not to pay them? The house isn't foreclosed? One doesn't have to pay for transferring automobile title fees, or annual license plate fees for cars over there? If not how are the local roads maintained, the interstate Highway patrol funded, and how are local public schools funded, and how is the royal family kept. Are they kept, and are local sanitation fees paid solely based on taxes on income? You don't have a licker tax or a sales tax over and above what the item costs? Which isn't paid if one purchases the same things on line? Though that isn't quite the same thing as a transfer of title, or an annual real estate fee, or a closure fee on the sale of a home. If you all don't pay those taxes I may as well go over there and purchase a condominium. I will bet your rents are less if the home owner doesn't have to also factor in his real estate tax. No wonder why you all are in such financial trouble over there if all your countries revenue comes from income. If I purchased a home or condominium I can't believe there wouldn't be closing costs or annual taxes above the cost of the real property. Hi Angel,
So to take it a bit further, you don't buy booze, you only hire it for a while, smile. I know lots of folk who own their own homes outright and I know even more people who own their own car outright. In fact, I know one guy here in the North of Scotland who owns a whole estate outright, and there are a few of them too!

No one owns a car or a house. They own the right to live or to drive the car. In America, at least, and I assume in England as well, property taxes pay for schools, sanitation, ETC. While the costs for registration of vehicles pay for the maintenance and the building of roads. Never having sold on a car or a house, I can't comment.
I just don't see why I have to pay to upgrade to the latest version and to pay to transfer the lisence. F S have had their money but they want more.

It is the same thing which happens when selling a car or a house. One just can't transfer title to either without paying transfer fees, and if you don't continue paying taxes on that home the home can be taken from its owner. Dear Jim
Software is unlike anything else we have in the real world in that it is not a "thing" that you have to own that actually depreciates, but instead with software you purchase is the right to use it which is sometimes transferrable or not according to the stipulation of the developer as rights granted to you by its license.
Part of the reason for this is that software has an ongoing cost regarding its maintenance even if you no longer own it yourself. If you sell JAWS for X amount of money that goes back into your pocket, whilst the cost of supporting it still lies with Freedom Scientific and associated dealers. A table or any other object can be sold and the deal is done it usually does not require anything else however nobody is going to help if you get a chip in the table or the leg falls off. For software it is different because those who will have to continue to look after that copy of JAWS brought by another individual still have the ongoing duty and cost to maintenance and support it, replace activations, replace a dongle, figure out why something doesn't work. This is the thinking behind a registration fee.
The requirement to upgrade to the latest version is more an indication that Freedom Scientific does not want a second hand market in its software. Some developers don't even allow you to transfer a license to another individual. I own several software titles that are like this. On some of these if I lose a dongle I would literally have to buy the software all over again. With JAWS as long as your are registered you do not have to buy your license over again.
One reason personally why I don’t think the second hand market in software is so good is that sometimes those with software to sell do not always play nicely. I have personally seen more than once where somebody has brought off a blind forum and found somebody has taken their money but not provided to keys to the software license itself leaving the buyer high and dry. This should never happen but it does.
I know now (and of course it is a Monday morning) that the hounds of hell will be unleashed upon me as a result of putting my head above the parapet.

I have a lisence for Jaws professional version 12 and it is now surplus to requirement but I found out that if I wish to sell on the lisence I have to 
firstly upgrade it to the latest version and then pay a transfer of
ownership fee of £80 or there abouts.
My question is why can't I sell this product to whoever is willing to pay 
for it?
Why does it have to be the latest version and why does it cost so much to 
transfer ownership?
Seems like a huge rip off curtesy of Freedom Scientific, or am I just being 
overly cynical?
