Actually the best thing regarding firewalls that I did, was done by pure
chance.

When I got my broadband connection I bought an ADSL modem with a router in
it. The first thing I did was to put the USB modem I'd been supplied with in
a nice safe draw. the modem I was using had a firewall in as well and, touch
wood, it's protected me thus far and configuring it is doable with jaws.

I don't get notifications of attempted unauthorised entries but there is a
log of them which I can look at if I want to and yes it's amazing how many
attempts are made.

I'm very ruthless with my firewall, if I don't need to use any given port,
it stays shut.

The other benefit of this unit is I can share the connection with up to 4
machines, more if I add a hub or two and it's all in one neat little box.

no, Wally I don't think you/any is being over dramatic lol. it's more
important to do these things when on Broadband as, we all know we are
connected all of the time and it's a bit harder to shut down the broadband
connection than it is to shut down a dialup connection.

very important. I'll have to look for another firewall personaly as, I'm
not happy with zone alarm. i'm not getting on with that well. I like
sygate a lot better. is that still going?
