[access-uk] Re: safely removing hardware (revisited)

Chris, I broke one of these HD's by accidentally forgetting to unplug it. Now I just get the thing running when I actually have a lot of things to clear off my laptops HD, then I close the lot down and when I can't feel the external running any moe I know it is safe to unplug it. This way I know it isn't plugged in and can't spoil it. They are too expensive and precious to make a mistake on.

By the way, I Never use hibanation mode as that continues to use electricity and when your paying the bills you just don't do that! Smiles. My laptop comes on as quickly from the start as it does hibernation, unless it is too cluttered.

Christine.

Subject: [access-uk] safely removing hardware (revisited)

Hi all,

I'm sorry to resurrect this subject again but I have a query regarding
my external hard drive.

I have had to connect this to my laptop as my desktop is dying and
wonder about the procedure for turning off when I'm leaving it connected
to the laptop.

Basically, I'm using the laptop on my desk at times and therefore do not
need, necessarily, to unplug everything. In this situation, where I'm
again going to put the laptop into hybernation and then bring it out
again for use, should I go through the "Safely Remove Hardware"
procedure before putting the laptop into hybernation?

Thanks for clarification on this point.

I don't think so Carol, as hibernation switches off your PC once it's saved the current state of the machine to the hard disk.
