the glass on the scanner goes right up to the front edge so the way you can scan books is quite similar. if I remember correctly, the reading edge machine has an angled part at the front that helps support the book. This is not there with the Plustek but generally the ability to scan up to the very front of the scanner is enough to read books. I have seen this scanner in operation and it is much faster than the reading edge at acquiring the scan of the page. You would of course need a program to use with it. Kurzweil 1000 can be used with the number pad on a PC or even a separate number pad and so it would be similar to using the Reading Edge. The Kurzweil 1000 software does cost £695 however.
