I wondered about having it round my neck but both Karen my guide dog and my border collie cross pet dog Bailey both paw and I'd be wary of them getting their paws caught in it etc.
A pencil case is a good idea.I've so far only got the labels that came with the penfriend itself but I can't find out what packs a and b contain and I'm desparate to know if there's more small labels as I seem to be using lots of them.

I haven't noticed I've knocked mine about but do keep it in a pencil case for safety.When I'm using it, but perhaps just stopping to move or check items for labelling, I just put it round my neck using the lanyard supplied. Each time you read a new label, (at least in the earlier versions, of which I have one) the volume raises to its maximum, which isn't too good; but, if it's a long item you're reading, you can at least turn it down with this button.
