I have a DS40 and have this too. Above the circle of buttons there are 3 buttons, the ones just below the screen. The middle button does this feature. It works both in play back and recording so you could choose to split your file up while listening back and decide not to worry about it when you are doing the recording.

Hello Jim,

I have the new DS-55, and although it doesn't have tone indexing, you can
index your recordings, so when you move through the file on playback you can
jump to each indexed point.  Hope this helps.
