Hello John,
As far as I know the AC adaptor can be used to power the unit with no
batteries installed, but can also recharge batteries. You can, of course,
use the USB cable and plug it into a PC to recharge the batteries. As you
mentioned in an earlier post, the new recorders have built-in batteries so I
would think they can be used while charging.
