[access-uk] Re: oasys 22c

Hi Tris,

A couple of things that have changed, or need correcting.

First, I am glad you said most N-series phones, do not get the N97. It is a
5th Edition phone, not 3rd and is not supported by Talks at this time.

Second, there are now two licencing methods, you can licence to the IMEI
number of the phone, or the Sim card. If you licence to the Sim, then Talks
will work on any new phone, provided the same Sim card is inserted. This is
a more expensive way of doing it, but if you change your phone often, it may
be desirable. The prices are 280 pounds for a new Sim licence, and 125
pounds for an IMEI to Sim Licence upgrade. The IMEI licence is as it always
has been. This is a choice that the user can make, as to which licencing
method they want. To switch back from Sim to IMEI is 50 pounds again.

I hope this helps.

All the best

Steve

Pretty much the entire E and N series phones have Symbian 60 operating
systems on them for TALKS to go on. In addition the 6220 classic can also
accept talks which is one of the cheaper alternatives. To get a phone that
will take any SIM card (including perhaps a local PAYG SIM when you go to
India) you would need an unlocked phone. If you buy a phone with a monthly
contract it is almost certainly going to be locked to whoever to that phone
carrier until such time as they recover the subsidised price of the phone
from your monthly spend which therefore retricts which networks you can use
it with. An alternative (although expensive initially) is to buy your phone
SIM free at an unsubsidised price from places like Expansys and others. I am
sure someone on the list can give you the hot tip on where are the cheapest
places to buy a SIM free phones from.

To get TALKS installed you would need a PC with the Nokia PC suite installed
on it. The software is licensed per phone via its IMEI number. If you
decide later to change your phone there is a £50 transfer fee to another
handset.

Regards.

Thanks for that, and to you Chris for your input.
What does simbion mean?
can i get a phone which will take any sim card? i have one for india and one
for the UK and the advantage of an oasys 22C is that I can put any sim card
in to it and it will work.
Can I do that?
Which phones do I look at?
How do I get the talks software put on the phone?
How many phones can I put the software on?
Any ideas?
I have no experience with this, so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ayesha x x x

Ayesha,

The best solution really to go for a talks phone. This will give you all
the functionality you want including, being able to fully edit text
messages. You also have the advantage of being able to sinc to a PC and of
course, all the additional programs which are on a simbian phone and, the
ones which you can add to it. You are also able to email and use the
internet on them. This is of course dependant on your tarriff etc. Talks
in general is very stable and I think your friend might have had some
compatibility issues or was using an old phone and version. Talks will work
on a wide range of nokia mobile phones but of course, they must be simbian
based.

Cheers for that clive. You know, on the RNIB's website under the
phones description, it clearly states that you can edit text messages.
Does anyone know if there is a better phone out there?
My oasys 22C is kind of broken and I desperately need a new talking
phone of some kind.
I did think of getting talks software but I had a friend who had it
and it kept crashing on his phone every 2 days. My family are scattered all
over the world and I need to be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week just
in case there is a problem, three of my four grandparents died suddenly and
without my oasys 22C I wouldn't have been able to be contacted or to contact
anyone else so I need the phone which is the most reliable regardless of
expense.
        Can anyone help?
