  hello Damon,
downloads are definitely months rather than years away. I too don't envisage
many people sitting passively in front of a PC to read; but get yourself a
laptop and home wireless network and you could be lying in bed or sitting in
the garden. but possibly reading in the bath might not be advisable.

Hi John. Is there a rough timeframe on when downloads will be along? Months
or years?

I'm really excited about the idea of this service. Great to see the RNIB
spearheading this. I'd definitely pay for it if there were downloads but am
unlikely to use the streaming service because I don't associate book reading
with sitting at a computer.

    Thanks

    ...Damon

      hello brian,
you can't download books right now. we're in negotiation with the
software manufacturers to obtain the necessary permissions. so downloads will
come before too long.

        Hi John,

Can I download books to listen too on the move, or should I keep me
talking book subscription open for this purpose.?

          Brian.

from RNIB

          hello listers,
I thought you'd be interested to know about a new web catalogue and
book streaming service from RNIB. If you go to www.rnib.org.uk/booksite you
will find our new, very user friendly catalogue containing all our audio books,
Braille books, music and maps. You can also register and buy items that are
for sale. The audio books are not just our conventional talking books but also
daisy versions of many of the most popular titles that we have recorded for
individuals. So as well as fiction and biographies you can find cookery,
gardening, the whole range of academic subjects and even books on the Archers
and old steam railways.

You can also join our bookstream bookclub and for £50 a year you can
stream audio books direct to your PC. So, just like a sighted person, you can
browse around, find something you're in the mood for and begin reading it
straight away.

But take a look for yourself and tell us what you think.

If you've got any queries that aren't answered on the site itself you
can contact our technology support team on 08459 000015.

Or talk to customer services on 0845 702 5153 You are also most
welcome to contact me directly by email: john.Godber@xxxxxxxxxxxx

          Happy reading.

          John
