[access-uk] microphone levels

Hi all.
My young nephew has gone up to PC World and purchased a combined
microphone/headphone set for 19.00. However, the sound level coming in
through msn is very quiet. I think he needs to turn up the mic volume in
Volume Control, but can anyone tell me to what degree please.
