Hi George.
It's all getting rather confusing now George. My device is the Belkin ADSL
Modem with Wireless G Router..
I was quoted a price of £75.00 and half an hours work. The job took four
days and the cost was £117.70. The shop fitted a wireless card to Pauline's
computer, which is located upstairs in the house. I was told to place the
router beside my computer downstairs, beside the telephone point. The shop
guy also told me that my Freeserve USB External Modem would now be obsolete
as the router was also a modem.
I connected my computer to the Router and could not get on-line. Pauline
has no problems getting on-line.
Any ideas as to what is going on would be very appreciated.
Best wishes.
Andy

make and model of router you have.
For example, I have a Draytek Vigor 2600G. This is not only

an ADSL/Broadband modem.
So with one single box. One cable goes from this to the
Broadband telephone point. I have four "ports" into which
PCs can be connected using a network cable, and any PC with
a wireless card can also "talk" to the device.

Hi Andrew.
Pauline's computer upstairs has the wireless card and the
router sits
beside my computer downstairs. I have a cable running
from the back of
my computer into the router and another cable from the
router to the
telephone point. Funny thing is that my wife can go
on-line no problems.
I am currently still using my old Freeserve usb modem,
switching between
it and the new router. My computer has Freeserve
connecting
automatically, so perhaps this is the problem. God knows
Andrew, I've
never had a router before so very unsure. I do have a
spare cable
though. It's the one with small blocks at each end. The
one used for the
old dial-up connection, but I cannot find a place to plug
this in.
Best wishes.

Hi Andrew.
I've plugged it into a slot beside 2 usb sockets at the
back of my
computer. It's not plugged into the old dial-up socket,
which is much
smaller. This plug is about the size of a usb plug
with a lock clip at
one side. There is no other socket on the computer
that this plug will
fit in to.
At the moment I'm using my old Freeserve usb modem so
as to keep in
contact with the list. If I remove it and don't get
the router to
work, then I'll really need to take the computer into
the shop. Tell
you what, I'll uninstall speed-touch anyway Andrew.
Having it may be
preventing the router from operating. I've also placed
speed-touch in
my start up menu, so perhaps this is causing the
problem also.
You said "When you plug the router into your computer,
can you get a
command window up and type in the command ipconfig /all
c:\file.txt,
then send me the contents of the file.txt in the root
drive?
"
Is the command window the same is the Run window? If
so, then I'll
give this a go. But I may not be able to if I cannot
get on-line.
Tell you what Andrew, I'll do nothing more than remove
speed-touch from
my start menu and re-boot, with the router correctly
fitted. If I get
no luck with that, then I'll completely uninstall
speed-touch.
Best wishes.

Hi Andy,
Just something else I have thought of after reading the
message. Where
exactly in the back of the machine did you put the
cable into? Was it
a plug on the back of the motherboard, or another
add-on card, or was
it your dialup modem you tried to plug the cable into?
It should go into an ethernet socket either located on
the motherboard
or in an add-on card, but it is not the dialup modem.

The shop

Hi all.
This is a long shot I'm thinking but if successful,
will stop me
having
to
take my computer into the shop.
I purchased a wireless card and a Router for my wife's
computer
The shop fitted the card for me.
I attached the cables from my computer to the router,
but just
beforehand, I
attempted to install the routers software.
The CD auto-ran and firstly started to install Adobe.
I thought that
perhaps this was to enable a purchaser to read a text
help file. The
auto-run facility then started searching for a file
within my Office
2000
directory and advised that it could not find it.
Subsequently, I
could
not
install the router's software.
My brother advised that I needed to delete or rename a
file within my
temp
directory but added that he was unsure which file.
Does this make sense to anyone? If so, I would be
very grateful for
some
assistance, as I'd rather avoided another trip into
town with my
computer.
Best wishes.
