Hi Terry

If you've just copied the files from an original XP cd onto a blank cd it will not be bootable. Even using the copy facility in Nero to make an exact copy of an original Xp cd won't work. The Cd has to be created in a special way to make it bootable. This is something I found out for myself a couple of months back when I was trying to do an unattended installation of XP.

Incidentally I had a problem with my laptop a month or so ago. The laptop failed to boot after performing a windows update where some of the updates failed to install. It would boot so far and then nothing would happen, even the hard drive stopped working. I tried using the recovery DVD, but again it would get so far and then freeze. turned out I had a faulty hard drive. If you can't get to the C prompt then I suspect there is a hardware fault somewhere.

Jackie has suggested something I hadn't thought of so hopefully that will work!

Darren.

Hi George

I have a copy of xp on my hard drive on the other pc. Can you tell me if I have done this currently?

My original xp cd is marked, so I tried copying the image off the hard drive, and burning it on to a blank cd. I just selected all the files, copied them to the cdrom drive, and selected burn from the option. I didn't use a particular programmed, just the copy and write to cd option within xp.

I've tried doing it a couple of times, but won't work to boot up the faulty laptop.

If my hard drive isn't being seen properly, should the xp setup still at least start to run?

Terry

Hi Terry,

What is the exact make and model of the laptop?

Do you have a "Recovery CD" or CDs for it?

(That said, I've recently had a similar problem with my
Toshiba which it appears is due to failed memory. And like
you, I was able to see the laptop's hard drive perfectly OK
on my desktop system.)

However, you should be able to set the BIOS to boot from the
CD, and then either boot up with the Recovery CD or an
Operating System CD and go from there. If that fails, it's
a most likely hardware problem of some sort.

George.

hi all

This all started with the laptop crashing.

I eventually was able to reformat the hard drive, by putting
it in a caddy,
and using my other pc to carry this out.

The hard drive is listed in the bios, but isn't seen when
booting the laptop
up using a floppy disk. i.e. after it boots up, and I type,
c: it goes to
c:, but it is in fact reading the cdrom. it will only let
me access a: and
c:, which as I said, is actually the cdrom.

I've looked in the bios, and there isn't anything obvious to
say that it is
disabled.

The hard drive is working, as I can see it in my computer,
when I connect it
to another pc.

When I try to boot the laptop up using a xp home edition cd,
again nothing
happens, because I guess it hasn't got anything to load on
to.

Any ideas has to what I need to do?

Thanks for any help.

Terry
