Hi Terry
Is there such a thing as being able to put the BIOS back to default in some way so that it automatically looks on drive C as its first port of call? This happened many many moons ago to me with a laptop, and I got a sighted person to set the BIOS, which did the trick. It seemed the laptop had a mighty crash and forgot what the hard drive was for, let alone where to find it. Could this be a possibility?

I can set the cdrom as the first option, during the boot up sequence, but still doesn't do anything. When the pc is turned on, the cd spins for a few seconds, then stops. I've tried booting from a floppy, then typed setup but just says, bad command or file name.
Is there something I need to do to the hard drive before xp can start to be loaded on to it?
I'm really annoyed with the whole thing, as I only bought it a few weeks ago, off another list.

What is the exact make and model of the laptop?

Do you have a "Recovery CD" or CDs for it?

(That said, I've recently had a similar problem with my
Toshiba which it appears is due to failed memory. And like
you, I was able to see the laptop's hard drive perfectly OK
on my desktop system.)

However, you should be able to set the BIOS to boot from the
CD, and then either boot up with the Recovery CD or an
Operating System CD and go from there.  If that fails, it's
a most likely hardware problem of some sort.

hi all

This all started with the laptop crashing.

I eventually was able to reformat the hard drive, by putting
it in a caddy,
and using my other pc to carry this out.

The hard drive is listed in the bios, but isn't seen when
booting the laptop
up using a floppy disk.  i.e. after it boots up, and I type,
c: it goes to
c:, but it is in fact reading the cdrom.  it will only let
me access a: and
c:, which as I said, is actually the cdrom.

I've looked in the bios, and there isn't anything obvious to
say that it is
disabled.

The hard drive is working, as I can see it in my computer,
when I connect it
to another pc.

When I try to boot the laptop up using a xp home edition cd,
again nothing
happens, because I guess it hasn't got anything to load on
to.

Any ideas has to what I need to do?
