Whilst iPod or iPod mini can come up as an external drive the actual way it
stores and organises it's data is quite another bucket of freshly mixed mud
since it is not human friendly. For this bit you need iTunes or Anapod to
help you do the organisation for you.

I personally take a dislike to iTunes software but on the other hand cannot
deny the ease of use in that it more or less automates the process of
feeding stuff in to synchronising with the iPod. Anapod can deal with the
iPod but the experience is not so slick.

Regards.

Hi,

I was wondering whether it would be possible to connect the Ipod to the PC
without installing the software, and whether it would appear as a drive in
Explorer. Then files could just be copied over? I have done this with a
digital camera and wonder if it would work in the same way.

There are some people who apparently have no sight and who say they can
use and IPod without any problems. I looked at one of the click wheel
models and think it would be next to impossible to do.

So, the IPod shuffle seems the most suitable alternative. Designed
without a screen, with a wheel with fixed functions, it seems perfect.
Plus, it's only £99.99 for a 1Gb version. Shame the accessories are so
bleeding expensive.

The problem with Ipods isn't really the hardware however. It's the ITunes
software that can cause you the most trouble. A lot of people have
reported that it is a swine with screen-readers. In fact, it is that bad
that it won't even work with Apples new screen-reader they are bundling
with the next release of there operating system.

There is however a solution, Anapod explorer from red chair software.
This now supports the IPod shuffle and gives access to the shuffle like
most other devices in Windows Explorer.

Of course, you have to use another method of getting music onto your PC,
but at least you can now get it onto an IPod and look cool!
