You did not talk about the screen freezing too Mike and I am so surprised that the Open University provided a blind student with a 600 odd pdf file to navigate, can you imagine that! Especially a department that is specially dedicated to disabled resources. Incidentally I had 2 pdf books for my Open University course in 2011, one book they had the sense to send in chapters and the 2nd book was in one file. I asked if they could break it down like the first book and the response I got was that they would have to askk the permission of the course team!!!! The course team must have said no, as the book was never forthcoming in chapters. Amazing. Just as well I could put it in to text and then break it up from there but they never think of the time involved in doing that.

Hi Jackie, Crappy pdfs? They only have disjointed text, poor formatting and in many cases have the whole book in one file.... What are you talking about??? <smiles> Kindest, Mike -----Original Message-----From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf OfJackie Cairns Sent: 06 November 2011 15:34 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: iPhone Ebooks Hi Steve, Husuf et alI decided to take the risk and download the textbook I need for university. It was in the iBook store, and it cost £15.99, cheaper than the paperback copy by a fiver. I have downloaded and am beginning to gingerly navigate it. I see what you mean Steve about being able, or not as seems to be the case, to send it to another device. You need to keep turning the page andso on, so I am as well using it as it is. I can also take it to uni and get my Campus Assistant to quickly find the portion I need if necessary. But atleast it's better than nothing, and waiting for publishers to send crappy PDF files that are a total mess to convert once opened. So far so good, and I haven't updated it to Daniel either, the lady will dome just fine! (smile). You would then however lose the levels of navigation unless youconverted it through some daisy software such as Dolphins to create a daisy book compatible with the plexter, stream or booksence type players. Unlessof course, it can be converted at source without requiring conversion to audio. If it were available for the iPod or iPhone, and I were to download it in the Appstore, could I read it using VoiceOver and record it onto say the Plextalk to allow better navigation? Is this just a dream or can I really do it?I haven't followed the threads about Ebooks or readers until now as I preferBraille wherever I can get it. So any suggestions gratefully appreciatedwhich may help those of us who need these texts in a format we can at leastaccess?
