Ok Barry I see what you are saying here, I haven't had a guide dog for 25 years and it is coming back to me but slowly.

Hi Andy

For several months, my beastie was distracted by other dogs, people and
kids. I had to just persevere with the checking and praising. Check him if
he was distracted, which had the side effect of making the people who were
deliberately distracting him feel guilty, then praise him when he got back
on the straight and narrow. It paid off. If he persisted in any one
occasion, I'd just turn him around and go away from the distraction. You
could try this technique with the kids. Go out with the dog, if he goes
towards them, turn him around and go back. Do this a few times and he'll
get the message. If he manages to get past them without a fuss, give him a reward and praise. I'm sorry, mate, it just takes perseverance, which means
you've got to get out there and do it. If it's the kids that are
deliberately distracting the dog, then someone needs to explain to them
about the role of a guide dog.

Barry

Hi Andy

The best way that I have found to build my confidence is to teach
someone else the things I know. If you are talking about your
confidence to go out and about with your guide dog, then perhaps you
could buddy up with a new guide dog owner in the area? Guide dogs
could help you with this. When I trained with my latest dog, my
trainer introduced me to a recently blind, new guide dog owner. I
became his mentor but we soon became friends and now meet for lunch
every week.

Also, something that I tell my girlfriend every time she goes for a
driving lesson is that she has done it before so she can do it again.
Use it as a mantra when you feel your confidence sliding.

Hope that helps

Barry
