Very good points, Barry, and I'd also get Windows Defender free from Microsoft. It's not clear to me how effective it is, but it is probably a bit better than Windows Firewall.

ZoneAlarm is also free to private users and provides a 2-way firewall.

Anti-spyware programs overall are necessary but mostly pretty inaccessible. Spybot Search and Destroy is a good one, but use more than one to cross-check your system.

A must is a firewall when you're on broadband. XP has a built in one but it only stops incoming intrusions. If you do get some malwear, the XP firewall won't stop it going out to everyone else. Sygate is a good firewall that stops traffic both ways and is quite accessible with screen readers. You ideally need the firewall on before you connect to the net as there are robot programmes on the net looking for vulnerable computers to put trojans and key stroke recorders on. I'd also recommend getting a virus checker and anti-spywear programme if you don't already have them.

Hi List,

I'm about to bite the bullet and go for a broadband connection. I am currently with wanadoo and will probably stay with them. However, what are the do's and dont's re broadband, what pitfalls might I encounter, all contributions welcome.

Many thanks in advance.
