Hi Peter. I agree with you on the Virgin Media bit. When I used their services they were slow time to time and even my broadband wouldn't work for half a day, and all they could say is to unplug the modem and switch my machine on and off for everytime I had these problems. They never had a explanation for the lack of service they were providing me. I am paying more for using BT. This isn't a problem as I have never had any problems as the above. Tech support is free and they can offer remote assistance if have trouble following their instruction or any other technical problem. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Logue" <plsd@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

access-UK.
Hi Billy,
Well basically we aren't served in Helensburgh by Virgin Media, not
Helensburgh west anyway. So we had to go with Sky. We've got a nice
movie/Sports package that we're happy with. We have sky broadband and BT
telephone. I too was fed up with Virgin Media; the service was oftentimes
slow. Moving to helensburgh we decided to make a change. It seems that many
people are happy with sky, so should be fine. We have to stick a satalite
dish on the wall or on a pole in the back lawn, but that's okay .

The reason I decided to go for a sky package is because I doubted the
coverage for free sat would be any good in the Helensburgh area. It also
covers my broadband, so I'm quite happy with it.

No difference.
It's the same kit but with no subscription to sky packages.
If you don't have a dish and box then you pay 150 for the kit and
installation. If you already have the equipment then you pay £20 for the
freesat viewing card.
If you have free sat you can subscribe to sky packages at any time you wish
but you don't have to.
The only difference between freeview and sky freesat is that with freesat
you get more channels (most of them pretty awful looking) and coverage of
about 97% of the country compared to about 73% coverage for freeview.

A bit confusing as bbc and ITV are jointly launching a freesat service
shortly too with claimed similar coverage but as yet no details of cost of
channels. As far as I can see the only advantage of the bbc/itv offering
over traditional freeview if you live in a freeview coverage area is that
the freesat is HD capable, so if you have an HD TV you can get HD
programming. The Beeb do say that all their freesat boxes will be AD
capable which would of course be excellent if it really happens, and that
there will also be freesat onboard digital tv recorders in the set top box
range. You'd hope that if the boxes are AD enabled and can record that they
should be able to record the AD too but we shall see.

Hi Phil, John et al

Could someone please tell me, privately if you've already covered this over the last few days, what Freesat is? I gather after browsing quickly through recent threads that it is an alternative Sky offering covering the Freeview channels? But why I am slightly confuzzled is because a friend of ours paid
£20 to receive the Freeview channels from Sky as a one off payment by
inserting a card into the DigiBox. And he receives AD on the channels he
watches. So what then is the difference between this £20 payment for a card to get Freeview channels through Sky, and the Freesat being discussed here?

Thanks for any clarification.

Jackie

Hi John,

Ok so things may have changed and we've not actually got Sky up and
running at mo even though we're still paying our £7 per month...we
moved 2 months ago and as I said we've not got round to getting new
Sky dish installed and probably aren't going to...however I am pretty
sure that when we started off on Freesat we were receiving AD on
channel 974 as I did watch some BBC1 programmes with AD. As I say
things may have changed since when we

Cheers,

Phil
