Hi Andrew, Basically, the difference is two-fold. Firstly, the pass key, which costs 199 pounds, allows you to make any computer talk without installing anything at all, it runs from the mini CD, and when you take the CD out, there is not a trace on the machine. Secondly, is the CD itself. I haven't received mine yet, but it appears to be a miniature CD, about credit card size, so it will go anywhere. Also remember, that on the pass key, you can not only run Freedom Box, but System Access as well, which is a fair screen reader. That means you can walk up to any computer and make it talk, just by putting in a CD. The problem with other approaches like the Dolphin Pen, as I understand it, is that there is no autorun on a USB device, so yes, you can put the pen drive in, but then you have to manually run the screen reader. However, I am wondering what is the difference between the £70 subscription and the £190 subscription? If I want to pay the £70, surely I could take the software round with me and install it on the target machine? I know people on Linux forums are very excited about the talking web browser in the Linux environment. Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Brian Hartgen Sent: Thu 12/05/2005 07:00 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] freedom box in the UK Hi Following a recent discussion on this list about freedom box, I would like to let people know that computer room services are now a UK reseller of many of the products in the range, which is excellent news. I would publicly like to wish Steve and Angie Nutt the very best of luck with this, since I really do believe in this product and what it has to offfer visually impaired people in the future. As far as I can gather, the UK price for the yearly subscription, where you receive the software, access to the freedom box network for a year and the system access screen-reading product is 70 pounds. I know I have said this on Infotech and this list before, but that makes this the cheapest screen-reading product available in Britain, and it's damn good for the money! Couple this with the superb internet facilities you have within freedom box, and you really have a bargain. The subscription to the pass key, which is the ability for one to take freedom box and system access around with you wherever you go, is 199 pounds. I feel this this is good value for money, since included within that cost is a year's subscription to the freedom box network. The cost to renew the pass key access thereafter is 70 pounds per year. I hope that Steve and Angie will be able to influence the content of the freedom box network a little more towards including a UK perspective, and I certainly have a few suggestions as to how that might be done if they are welcomed. However, there is certainly stacks of value in the use of the network as it stands.
