It announces the name of the station as words.  And everyone I know who's had 
experience of the sonus says it's the best most accessible thing since sliced 
bread.  It's true that if you want to read the radio text it has to be spelled 
out, but that's because the set relies on sampled speech and not on a text to 
speech or screen reading solution.  But all in all it's fab fab fab!

  am I right in thinking that the pure radio doesn't speak out the name of the 
  radio stations in full but spells it out letter by letter? If so, isn't that 
  a less than satisfactory user experience?
