[access-uk] Re: dead laptop - your help needed

Hi George,

Hmm, and I was led to believe Toshiba were a good reliable brand...

What I could really do with is finding someone decent to take a look at it
and at least tell me if it's salvageable and if not do something like you've
suggested to at least get the data off it in particular my Outlook data file
as the one thing I didn't backup was my emails, contacts etc..I know, silly
me.

I'm not best pleased though as I've not added any hardware to it and it cost
over £1000 and I've had it lessss than 3 years, I knew I'd have to replace
it within the next 12 - 18 months but I didn't expect it to give up on me
like this..

I don't think I'll be sending it off to Toshiba though, I'm a similarly
tight-fisted Northumbrian...

Thanks anyway,

Phil

Hi Phil,

Don't give up just yet - please!

My old trusty Toshiba died at the beginning of this year.
Toshiba's repair centre told me it was memory, and wanted to charge me over
£200 to actually reduce the memory from the 2 Gigabytes it had had for over
two years, to 512 Megs. (I had exceeded the machine's memory
specification!!)

Well, being a tight fisted Scotsman, I suggested where their memory could be
placed, paid the £35 for their quote, and had it back.

I bought a USB disk drive adaptor from Maplin, removed the laptop's hard
drive, and was able to get all my data back on to my desk top system.

And to be honest, I've not bothered to dig deep into what is or was actually
wrong with the Toshiba. It cost almost a thousand when I bought it Duty
Free at Heathrow four or five years ago - and much the same spec. comes in
at around £350
- £450, including Duty and VAT these days.

In fact I'm now running my wife's old Sony Vaio, which is even older, and it
does most of what I want when I'm on the road. That's what I'm using as I
write.

George.

all looking pretty drastic...a new hard drive, hey ho, just what I need!

Thanks anyway guys..

Anyone got any experience of having this sort of work done by a company /
individual and if so can they pass on their details..

Cheers,

Phil

Richard:
Provided that you don't have a disk in any of the drives, it sounds as if
the HDD may have failed.

There are clever people about who may be able to put an external drive onto
it with a bootable Linux disk, and extract the files, but sounds from my
more limited experience than some on the list, that a new HDD may be the
answer.

Subject: [access-uk] dead laptop - your help needed

Hi,

Bit of a nightmare here as my Toshiba Tecra m3 laptop has decided to die on
me and I know it's a bit of a longshot but I'm wondering if anyone out there
can help?

It was working fine until yesterday afternoon from when it's decided to to
not power up when I switch it on. When I press the power button I can hear
the hard drive click into place and the fan starts whirring but it doesn't
get any further than that and from what I can tell with the little vision I
have all I am getting is a black screen. I have left it on for a while just
in case it's restoring itself but no joy.

My wife is away at present until Friday so I've no sighted assistance easily
to hand. I bought the laptop 3 years ago this October from PC world but
didn't' take out the extra cover so if it needs to go somewhere to be looked
at I'm going to have to find another place to send it...

so there you go, all a bit of a mare...yes I've managed to profile myself on
this old desktop which the wife & kids use which thankfully still has a copy
of Jaws on it but obviously I'd much rather have my laptop back in action
ASAP.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestion?

With thanks,

Phil
