Barry if what you are looking for is a template to modify then I would say
that your best plan is to save the document as a word template and you can
select a document based on this by going to the file menu with alt f n and
selecting new. Don't just use the short cut control N.
This is done by going to save as with f12 giving the document a name and
choosing Document Template from the file types list.
If you are talking about doing this in other word processors such as wordPad
then your method of creating a read only file by changing the properties of
the file which you want to save in this way.

Hi George
Yes, I did briefly look at these options, but they were more than I needed
in this case. I am going to use a file as a template and don't want to
permanently change the original information. My problem was that I was
looking to make the document read only before I had saved it. As soon as
Chris told me what to do, I realised my mistake.
Thanks
Barry

Hi Barry,
Have you looked in Word's Tools menu, and "Protect
Document"?
This is a somewhat more secure way of preventing people
making changes.
You could also consider going a step further, and adding
Passwords to documents.
George.

Barry, press alt enter on the file in My Computer/Windows
Explorer, and
check the "read-only" check box. Press enter to save your
setting. Hope that
helps.
