Hi Ray.
When the DS50 is in it's case, the power on/off/lock key is hidden as is the
Enter button and associated, left, right, up and down, buttons.
What I do is remove the unit from it's case, use the dial to select a folder
then press the record button twice. This starts the recorder and
immediately pauses it. I then half insert it into it's case and press
record again to resume recording, I then lock the unit, to avoid pressing a
button accidentally during recording and gently slip the device all the way
into it's case. As you can imagine, this causes quite a lot of unwanted
noises at the start of each recording, but these can be cut out, once I've
got the file in GoldWave. I can then do my recording safe in the knowledge
that I'll not accidentally press a button or if I dropped the unit, the case
could offer some protection.
I have considered cutting the case to reveal the power on/off/lock key and
this can be done without really weakening the case, but the dial and it's
arrow keys cannot be managed in the same sense, as this would probably
destroy the case.
However, if for example, all you wanted to do was listen to a podcast or
some music on a train journey, you could insert the device upside down,
revealing the power off/on lock key and the dial and arrow keys, as these
are all you use when listening, and a headphone could still stick through
the case at the top to reach it's socket.
So although the case is not perfect, it's much better than having no case at
all. Anyway, I'm yet to see a perfect case for anything that I've purchased
like this. This case was probably mass produced for a phone.
Hope this is of help.
Best wishes.
Andy
