You're right Ray. Too techie for me (smile). That's why I leave it running along with whatever the router does. It saves me getting aggro that the thing has been turned off etc.

Jackie, you won't learn much from me - at least on this - (smile).
I'm not knowledgeable enough about firewalls and how they work beyond
a few generalisations. I do know they're supposed to stop nasties
getting out as well as in. The problem is knowing what is a nasty. A
firewall will alert you to suspicious activity if it is a good one,
but often the message is so meaningless that you don't know whether to
allow a piece of traffic or not. I'd say a good firewall willl link
you to info you can understand in an on-line database, but I've not
come across this yet.

Cheers,

Ray, ours is a Netgear router provided by Sky, our ISP. But I've
always
left the Windows firewall running because it never occurred to me I'd
be
safe to turn it off and let the router do its thing alone. That's why
I'm
here, to learn from you guys!! (smile).
