I have had lots of run-ins with Glenn Tookey but am I not correct in saying that Glen told us on this list that he has a blind person whom he can call on when necessary for such a job, it is just that this person is not in the office. I had hoped to have a demonstration of a braille display from a blind person working for a company and following a very rude personal e-mail sent to me with the company footer, I had to decline the demonstration. How sad is that? It did not matter as I am comfortable with sighted people demonstrating braille devices to me in any case as my level of braille is good enough to be able to find my way around the equipment in terms of reading the braille and I do not need a sighted person to tell me if my finger is on the letter A or the word 'and' when I am in grade 2 braille and feeling the single cell abbreviation. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ankers, Dave (UK)" <Dave.Ankers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

No blind employee to test out their equipment!

How short sighted is that!

Cheers

Dave

You mentioned Sight and Sound Glenn, I did not. But, whether you like it or not, people don't care for Freedom Scientific, and that is unfortunate for you as their main UK dealer.

I know ATW will usually go with the cheaper option and that it happens to be the Focus in many instances. But people do have a right to contest this view if they feel the display doesn't suit their specific needs. I have heard you take the view that one display feels much like another, but this is simply not true for lots of reasons.

Freedom gave me the run-around over my PowerBraille not working when they decided to remove the serial component from its driver from JAWS 11 and above, and I would not buy a Focus on the strength of that alone, far less put up with its limitations and ergonomic design not being suitable for me.

It isn't anything personal, and I am not questioning the support Sight and Sound offers, even though you don't have a resident blind employee there to test out your Braille hardware.

Diplomatically put Jackie, but Sight and Sound Technology are not Freedom Scientific and we do our level best to look after our customers, irrespective of Freedoms' view of life.

The Focus 80 is £5995, but does not have all of the features of some of the other more expensive displays. It is reliable and does a good job for those who have purchased it.

Regards
Glenn

Hi Will

Let me just put it as simply and as diplomatically as this. Alva and the dealers who sell their products are not Freedom Scientific and the way they work. It's a bit like buying a car I suppose. Some are better than others, and the more you spend, the better it's likely to be. I don't want to get into a cost debate, it's all been said and we all have our views on it. I'm merely pointing out that you could say to your assessor that you want something else for whatever reason you have the imagination to come up with.

If you are getting a Focus, then good luck if that does what you need it to do. It's an ok display, but not for me.

Agree entirely without a doubt the Alva represents quality every which
way you look, whether you need a 40 or 80 cell display.

I guess I'd better clarify before the vultures start hacking at me!
(grin).

The Focus is heavy, isn't a patch on the Alva in terms of Braille
quality for long document reading, and has the most diabolical plastic
tray on the back of it on which your keyboard or laptop is supposed to
sit. Yes you can remove it, but it's awful. The display doesn't
support
Bluetooth either.

Still, enjoy Will if that's what you are ending up with.

Hi Will

An 80 cell display is indeed one line of Braille, and it isn't that
long because you can use keys on both ends of it to read with your
left or right hands to advance the text. An 80 cell is much better
in my
opinion on a PC.

And if you want a recommendation, go for the Alva BC680 from Optelec.
It has USB and Bluetooth, and can do all sorts of nice things like
allow you to split the display so you have a portion of it for what
is on your PC screen using USB, and another portion connected via
Bluetooth to your phone. I'm not saying you would always want to do
that, I certainly don't, but it's a feature. And I have to say the
Braille on the Alva is second to none.
