Steve, if you visit
www.johnlewis.com
you'll discover the very same one is out of stock, and a lot more than I paid for it originally.

www.comet.co.uk
has something exactly similar for £899 web price, and £949 store price, with a slightly different model number which escapes me right now.

You could also go to
www.hp.com
and check out a full spec on there. Ian reckons there are two hard drives on my machine, because he hears the rustling coming from two different sections. But one drive is partitioned into a small amount for the recovery disks.

Hope that helps.

Jackie

Hi Steve

Mine I think is an HP Pavilion DV9590EA, but it was bought in August 2007,
so the likelihood is you'll get the same spec with a slightly different
model number now.

Hi all,

Only replying to you Carol because it is part of the thread, rather than
to
you personally, but my problem is when you look at HP online specs etc,
none
of the laptops specify whether they have numeric pads or not. That's why
I
am curious to know models etc. Jackie, what's your model number?

All the best

Steve

Billy,

This was about a year ago and I'm afraid I don't remember details now ...
except that she ended up with an HP.

I suggest you find out what's current and go from there. Sorry I haven't
purchased so recently and some manufacturers change stock every few weeks
...

Carol, this is great, but which 3 suggestions did you ask your friend to
consider, this could also be helpful, if you don't mind?, and what were
the pacific considerations?,

OK, Billy,

One of my considerations was whether I personally had to see the machine
before I bought. I ended up not doing so but had good recommendation
from someone else on list about its size and the keyboard layout. Those
things particularly interested me first off.

If you can get to a shop, just to look around at laptops as a start then
this could be helpful to you. I had done this when helping a friend to
purchase and I narrowed her choice down to three, then left her to
choose.

Let us know how you get on from time to time.

Carol, I don't really think the cost would put me off purchasing the
machine I really wanted. Anyway it will be a belated Christmas present
from my good lady wife Anne.

I have to say my DELL is very lightweight, its keyboard was easily
memorized and is easy to get around (even with using the shift key with
JAWS and its speed is pretty good too! The down side was the price I
ended up paying for a good spec, once I'd added extra space on HD,
memory, etc., etc, and the fact that you have to have so much rubbish
installed, all of which you then have to uninstall and sort out.
Fortunately, this proved not to be as hard as I'd anticipated and soon
my DELL was purring along. The other day was the first time in over a
year I had had any problem and that was due to the fact I'd forgotten
that after half an hour it would automatically go into Hybernate.

For anyone thinking about a laptop, it's good to consider all aspects
and don't rush into buying the first thing you see.

In my mind, having seen the HP that Jackie has when I helped a friend
buy a laptop, I'd say that I was just put off with its weight and size
for me and didn't want to know any further.

My Dell also has excellent sound quality by the way and I love it for
music.

Oh please don't take this off group, I'm interested too...But all
wide

screen laptops have a numerical keypad, I prefere my small laptop
though as it takes up less desk/table and its easier to take to
college etc. I've bought a laptop kit from Aldi for £13 a while back
and in that case there is a key pad, different cables and adaptors, a
mouse and a clip on light. Ok I only need the keypad as I'm totally
blind, but it was the same price as the ones at PC world but comes in
a zipup case and I have the other bits, just incase!

I shall be buying a new laptop this year, so I'm interested in the
sound of your new one especially if the sound quality is good? Can
you tell us where we can read about it online and find out the cost
plus if we can take out an extended guarantee? Many thanks,
Christine.

Hi Billy

I'm currently using an HP Pavilion laptop which we purchased in
August 2007. I'm so pleased with it that I'm thinking of changing my
old desktop machine for one the same or identical in the not too
distant future. To be honest, along with my mobile phone, it was my
best purchase last year I like it so much.

The spec of the one I have comprises a 320GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM
and runs Windows Vista Home Premium. It supports both HD and
Blu-Ray

DVD, but I didn't buy it for that reason specifically. It has some
crap on it, like most do, but I love its speed and, above all, sound
quality. I've got my entire music collection on it and it's
brilliant

hooked up to my hi-fi.

The beauty of most of the HP laptops is that they have the numeric
keypad on them which means you don't need to combine JAWS keystrokes to work with it. Therefore, bear in mind that with a 17 inch screen,
it's not the lightest for lugging about, but it isn't an issue for
me

with my man about (big smile). Also, I think battery life is about
two hours, but it isn't an issue for me as such as I don't move it
about.

If you want to know more, I can give you further info off list if
you

prefer.

Good luck.

Jackie

hi guys,
I know it is rather difficult to answer this question, as it is a
matter of preference, but I am now even more confused on what
Laptop

to purchase.
I have done lots of research on the Internet, and that includes
Google, but the only problem there is: Not much Information about
visually impaired Laptop users.

I would like to hear from blind Laptop users, and which systems are
best for accessibility to visually impaired people.

I have heard about some problems blind users have experienced with
ACER Systems.

I'm sure there isn't any particular Laptop that is totally
accessible, but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
Billy
