What was the name of the port that was added when you plugged in the
USB to Serial converter?

George.

  Hi Brian,

O.K. What we need to establish is exactly what USB Port your USB to
Serial device has installed itself on. Once you plug it is, it is
best to make sure you always use that USB socket.

To start with, I'd unplug the device, and proceed as follows.

Go to Control Panel, Printers and select Add Printer. Select Add
local printer, where it may likely default to a Port of LPT1 (Printer
Port). It's a list selection box, so make a not of the ports which
are listed.

Plug your USB device back in, and repeat the above, looking
specifically for an additional item and make very careful note of what
it is, and highlight it if it's just the one port that's been added.

Press OK or Next which will take you to a list a printer
Manufacturers and Models of printer. On the left is Manufacturer
where you want to select GENERIC. One selected, on the right will be
a list of types, the first of which is "Generic / Text Only" - select
that, and click next. You may well be asked if you want to keep an
existing driver or replace it - two radio buttons. Highlight
whichever one says "Recommended".

You'll then be asked if you want to give the printer a special name
other than what has been suggested. Good idea to call it "Braille
Embosser".
Click next and all that might be asked is if you want to share the
printer.

All being well, if you now look at your list of printers, "Braille
Embosser" will be listed.

Now try printing from Notepad, but REMEMBER to select the Braille
Embosser, not your default printer.

See how you get on with the above, and we'll take it from there.

  George.

  Subject: problem with basic embosser

  Hi George

  details as follows;

  embosser: basic s

  serial No.: 25208

conected via: serial rs232 at embosser end,to USB at PC end.

  OS: windows media: XP pro.

don't know if these embosser settings will be of help but:

  Serial communications:

  baud rate: 9600

  data bits: 8

  parity: none

  stop bits: 1

  handshake: software

I tried printing from notepad. It appears to send the print
instructions,
but prints nothing. When i connect the embosser the PC acknowledges
that
there is hardware.

When selecting help from the embosser, it embosses correctly.

Thanks for our help so far, this is an anoying problem and probably
has a
simple solution, i hope.

  Brian
