Ok Christine, this is what you do using Jaws but I think the same applies using other screen readers. 

Press the Jaws key (insert) with F11 to bring up the System tray window.
Arrow down until you locate the icon Safely Remove Hardware.
Tap three times to land on the Left Double Click button and press enter on it. The Safely Remove Hardware window should open and you will land on a list of devices that are connected to your computer. The Zen Stone will be on that list if it's connected and it will show up as (USB Mass Storage Device), arrow up and down until you land on it. 
Tap twice to get to the Stop Device button and enter on it.
Now finally, wait a moment or two until a message pops up advising you that the device was stopped and that it can be removed safely. 
That's it you're done!
Now maybe using the Zen Stone software is easier if you are not familiar with the above, baring in mind that if you have more than one storage device connected to your computer at the time they will all show as USB Mass Storage Devices in the list of devices, which would make it more difficult for you to guess which of them is the Zen Stone. However, you can use the above steps to stop any device that is connected to your computer through a USB port should you ever need to.

Hi Christine, the mains charger can perhaps become useful if you're away

for

a few days and don't have a computer. But I just wanted to point out that
there's another way to disconnect the Zen Stone from your computer safely. On the system tray click on (Safely Remove Hardware(, a window will appear 
ware you can then disable your Stone making it safe to be disconnected

from

your computer.
