Thanks Barry, but this could present a problem. The machine in
question is a Toshiba laptop which has only a Recovery CD not the
normal Microsoft XP one. I have always been warned to be very
careful about using this because it could restore the drive to its
factory settings, which would be a disaster.
Since my original post it has occurred to me that a work around might
be to download and install Disk Keeper Lite again and use it in place
of the XP defragmenter.
However I will await any other suggestions from list members.
