Hi Peter
I have a demo copy of Supernova here which uses the Orpheus synch. While I
would agree that the sound is not the best. I would not have too much
difficulty getting used to it, and the speeds at which it will read are
quite fast.
I am considering all sorts of things at the moment. While Zoom Text is OK
for my purposes at the moment it is not a fully functional screen reader,
but as has been said already on this thread there is nothing which does
everything. that is needed.

Yeah, I just paid $310 Canadian to upgrade to Jaws Pro. I feel ripped off,
sure. I thought perhaps I'd try Hal, but I uninstalled that after 10
minutes. I just could not stand that Orpheus synth. The tone is
reminiscent
of 1980's screen readers.

hi barry
JAWS-bashing is very fashionable at the moment. I recently bought a
Brailliant braille display from Humanware, so I have I think Window Eyes
Version five that came bundled with it, so if I wanted to I guess i could
upgrade it. However, look at how long it has taken GW Micro to put
propper
support for Word in place - and even now it doesn't do things like
automatic
reading of the titles of rows and columns in tables. So for a good few
years I would have had no option but to use JAWS as I was having to make
and
use word tables all the time. Freedom Scientific were the first ones to
come up with the idea of "quick navigation keys" in Internet Explorer, and
GW copied them. It wouldn't surprise me if we soon see the same
functionality in gW's support for word, since it has just been introduced
in
JAWS.
I agree with some of your points - I can't get excited about the Speech
and
Sounds Manager and it is ridiculous that those of us who need to use XP
Pro
are forced to pay such a high price for access, I think they are taking
advantage of the fact that JAWS Pro is likely to be purchased by employers
and educational institutions rather than individuals. MsN Messenger
Version
7 support took far too long to arrive. The way JAWS lists and accesses
available synthesisers also needs reorganisation. JAWS setup file is big,
but also remember it includes all of the JAWS utilities and their demo
daisy
reader. The Daisy reader should be an optional, separate installation
file,
but unfortunately it isn't. Lots of things do break in JAWS, but then
you
could argue that there are more things to break in the first place. Can
you
run window-Eyes from the system tray? Also, as many people have pointed
out, WE does have quite a few limitations as far as customisation is
concerned, which means if you have an applicaition that doesn't work so
well
it is quite hard to do anything about it, and third party developers are
unlikely to go near it because GW still haven't implemented any system
that
allows setfiles to be locked to the product serial number. I have to
access
dictionaries and reference CD-Roms and the only way I can do that quickly
and efficiently is with some JAWS scripts that I wrote myself, one of
these
applications wouldn't work with Window-Eyes at all.
So basically I would urge anyone to try as many different access products
as
they can before buying anything. They all have their advantages and
disadvantages and no one product is going to be right for everyone.

Wow!
As somebody who's used JAWS for a number of years, (perhaps not as long
as
some), but I consider myself a fairly advanced user of the screnreader my
advice is to stick to Window Eyes.
I'm waiting on 5.5 being released and I'm making th eswitch. I'll still
have JAWS and no doubt will use it from time to time but. Look at the
product feature lists, look at what works and what doesn't, look at the
customer service and tech support of |GWMICRO Vs Freedom Scientific.
Look at past major releases of JAWS and Windoweyes. Who's released what,
what's worked and what hasn't. What has been broke in JAWS? With each
release of JAWS things are broke.
Why? Because they're patching Ancient code over at Freedom. Look at
JAW's download size now, what 52meg vs Window Eye's 12meg? That is what
is known as bloatware.
It's been a long time coming my own switch but I dont' see a successful
future for JAWS.
The only way out is if they do what Dolphin did. Strip it and re-write.
However, I suspect for Freedom it would also take some internal
re-focusing. I.E. away from profits and focused on what users want not
what they think we should have with nonsense noises for website
navigation.
Personally I think it would be an awful move for anyone to switch to JAWS
now.

Hi Guys,
I am a Window-Eyes user and have been over many years. Lately, I
am increasingly becoming aware of some serious shortcomings of it,
especially in the department of scripts for various applications. I am
therefore, seriously thinking of moving over to Jaws which, I realise
now, I should have done a long time ago as it appears to be the most
widely used screen reader by the blind community. Anyway better late
than never. My question now is, is there any way I can try Jaws,
before I fork out of hundreds of poundsfor it, and would the trial
version be fully functional? Your responses would be gratefully
appreciated.
