Hi Mike,
On vista, most programs use the default playback device for outputing any
audio. However, vista doesn't automatically change which playback device is the
default when you plug or unplug things - you have to do it manually, as
described below. In passing, if you had headphones and speakers which were both
pluged into the same sound card, they would know about each other, but you're
using usb headphones. The other thing with vista, is if you change the default
playback device, then it appears that any program which was using the old
default playback device will carry one using it until it's restarted.
To change which playback device is the default:
1. Open the sound dialog. One way of doing this is to open the start menu, and
type in the word sound into the search box. If you then press down arrow to
move through the search results, you should soon get to sound, and then press
enter.
2. The Sound dialog opens on the playback page, and the first control is a list
of devices, and this should contain an item for your speakers. Before setting
it to be the default device, you can quickly test that they're working - see
below for details. To set as default, either choose set as default device from
their shortcut menu, to tab to the set default button and press it. Then press
the ok button to close the dialog.
To test a device to see whether it's working before you set it as the default,
on the playback page of the sound dialog, choose test from the devices context
menu. You should hear a few tones from the left and then the right channel. If
you don't hear anything, you can check that the volume isn't set to zero and
that it isn't muted. To do this:
1. Either choose properties from its context menu, or press spacebar.
2. A properties dialog opens for the device. Move to the levels page, where
the first control is a volume slider, and the second is a mute button which
unfortunately doesn't read whether it's set to mute or not.
best of luck,
David.
orginal message:
Dave,
Thanks for advice, I had to wait for sighted help to arrive, but now I have
sound through the USB headphones, but when unplugged there is still no sound
from the speakers!!
I even tried to plug it into the front headphone socket, but still no sound
from speakers, but on pluggin in my USB headphones, I get sound from them!!!
Really odd, is this a trait of Vista? On-line I read of a master volume
control, but I cannot find it on control panel in sound, they sure make it
easy!!
Mike
