Alex, you'd have accepted with grace just like I did. It wasn't as if I had any choice at the end of the day. They were so damn nice about it all that my bid for independence just gave way to gratitude. At least I didn't get the: "Good girl, one more spoonful" scenario like you do when feeding a baby. They got to know me, and I them, so it was very much a case of: "Right you, open your gob." The liquid was even more tricky, so they used to cut a long straw in half so I could bend it over the cup and drink that way. Tea through a straw? Hmm, gave that a miss!
But, better than any Virgin Trains menu, I got mine all read to me, with an explanation given for the dodgy names they gave some of the grub that made it sound better than it actually was (laugh).

Hi Jackiesounded like an interesting experience being fed like that, I can't imagine how I would have felt, but then again, if it is the only way to get food, Iwould have to accept it. As for food in the bed, I'm absolutely not going to go there at all, I wish I had gone to one of ummm, that kind of party once or twice in my long forgotten youth! hehehehehe Alex skype name: grytpype2006 windows live messenger name: alex.thynne@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Jackie Cairns Sent: 28 January 2008 18:12 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: Virgin trains access to their restaurant menus Well Dave if you want a laugh, I heard once that this totally blind blokewas eating a meal somewhere, and he was having trouble cutting up his food. Eventually, he leant back in frustration and his tie flopped onto his chest!he had been cutting it instead of the steak on his plate!! how embarrassing!!It was one of the saving graces of being fed in hospital to be honest. Thefirst time I was allowed food after my op, the nurse brought me a chickensalad. I asked if she would mind cutting it up and feeding me with it as I couldn't cope with trying to balance it on my chest, cutting it up, and thentrying not to drop everything in the bed. She said: "Oh God I neverthought." From that moment on, they took it in turns to feed me until I wasstrong enough to perch on the edge of my bed and feed myself. Felt like a prat opening and shutting my mouth like a goldfish while I waited for the fork, but it was better than sharing a bed with cucumber, boiled egg and bits of lettuce. (lol).Anyway, good on Virgin Trains for at least offering to provide an electronicformat. I need to find a battery powered lamp, as most restaurants like using no light what so ever, hmmm I mean atmospheric lighting. I think I manage to catch my food approx fifty percent of the time! mmmmm empty fork again. Yes frustrating and embarrassing and personally I now hate eating out, as I never know when I have spilt something on myself. Add to that, the movement of a train, oh yes what fun. Dave Derek, my view is that it sounds reasonable to me. They are offering to make the menus accessible, even if the format you might want is other than electronic. But I would be happy with that if I had asked and got that response. But menus? Lunching on a train? Phew! I take my own packed lunch wherever I go. I've certainly been known to buy a carton of hot water - oh sorry tea - but that's as far as it goes unless I'm really stuck. Then it's a sandwich and a packet of crisps. Enjoy!! It is their response to my suggestion that there is a need for Braille menu. I have also suggested a sort of compromise, that the menu details could be send to me via email. ------------------------------------------ "I have been passed a copy of your email of 25 January which you senttoour vtmediaroom address. As part of my role I have responsibility for reviewing arrangementsforpeople with disabilities, and am aware that you have had previous correspondence with our Customer Relations team in respect of ourmenus. As I believe you are aware we change our menus very frequently, andforthis reason felt that the most effective way of getting them to you wouldbeelectronically, as I understand that you have the ability totranscribethem. If you would like them, I can email the pdfs of the menus for the daysyouare due to travel with us. Please let me know if this is sufficient for your purposes. We areverykeen to get information to you in the most effective way possible. With best wishes Chris Hagyard Franchise Manager West Coast" ------------------------------------------------ Ok now how easy would it be for them to copy pste the pdf file to the email. If a company is aware we use email, and if they offer to send information in a pdf file, have they acted ina reasonable way given that many of us may have problems with pdf files. I shall be asking Virgin to please send in body of email, or a word document file.
