Hi Carol.

I've been using computers since dos 3.1 and have depended upon my sighted and lovely, very lovely wife, Pauline to assist me. I have memories of messing about for hours, getting my computer to boot from the CD Drive, setting up Outlook Explorer etc so was ready for a night of begging for assistance.

Last night., However, when I turned my VISTA computer on, it immediately noticed that I was connected to a Network and simply asked me if this was the case. I did not have to go through the complicated motion of naming a work group or anything, it simply set it up for me.

While Pauline was watching TV, I clicked on Windows Mail, thinking that I'd at least start the process, and was asked for my file name, user name and perhaps one other question and suddenly , , I started to download my mail.

I was also able to find the new Control Panel and change to High Contrast No 2 and also enlarge my size of text. I was also able to turn off my Desk-Top background scheme, so now have a nice black screen. Tonight, I'm hoping to change the system to list files in List View and Pauline will not be back from Unit until 10.00pm.

So Carol, thus far, I'm very impressed eh? I've got a degree of confidence which is growing and I'm honestly beginning to think, that I can do all of this alone, without sighted assistance. Magic eh!

My new computer is a Hewlett Packard and is very fast, quiet and definite. I'm really getting quite excited as everything seems to be going my way and I'm able to do these tasks independently,.

So this is by far, my best upgrade to date and I've been using computers for over 20 years. So I'm feeling great, as you can imagine, though I'm waiting for something to go wrong. You know what? It may not! This really fills me with confidence . Goodness, I've waited for it as we all have eh?

Andy

What's so easy to set up, I mean, how it is so easy in comparison?

Hi Saqid.

Thanks very much for your notes. I'm sure they will help me get
started with VISTA.

I have only been messing about this evening but found it so easy to
register, to set up my mail account and to listen to my first sample
music via the WMP.

I'm so impressed. Keep thinking though that something is going to go
wrong at any moment, as usual. But, touch wood, everything is so
much easier to set up.

Do you know if I can export my addressbook from Outlook Express into
VISTA. Also, my folders of files in OE, can I get them over to my
VISTA machine?
Thanks again very much for your support.

Andy.

Hi Andy. I really don't think you will have much of a problem. When I
purchased my Dell Vista machine Jaws 9 worked fine. The only
difference between XP seems to be the menu listing order and the
terminology. For example you will not see the icon named display in
control pannel. There will be an icon called eas of use instead.
I'm still trying to get to grips with Vista. Just another thing you
should note. When ever you download a file from the internet, The
file will be downloaded in the download folder which can be found
under your profile name. For example bring up the start menu and
arrow down a couple until you hear welcome centre and arrow right in
to a sub list which has icons such as control pannel, computer,
connect to, music, documents and your name. When you select your
name you will see a hoast of folders including the download folder.

I think I've given you a mini tuturial on accessing your home
folders as well.

Hi all.

Took the big plunge today and purchased a HP VISTA desk-top PC. It's sitting in the kitchen in a couple of big boxes and I'm
planning to put it together tomorrow with sighted assistance from
my wife Pauline. I have a copy of JAWS Pro 8 to install, though I am hoping to
upgrade this week to JAWS Pro 9, which will probably arrive within
ten days. So I've not done a thing to it thus far. I'm looking for some
advice. For example, is there anything that I should do to the
settings prior to installing JAWS. For example, I have since
Windows 95 used the High Contrast Number 2 display colour option as
this is less harsh on my eyes. Should I wait until JAWS has been
installed before attempting to change this?

I have a document titled something like Setting up XP to work with
JAWS. I have used the recommendations in this document for several
years, to change settings to maximise JAWS. I was wondering if
there was perhaps a similar document which would tell me how to
enable JAWS to work at it's best in VISTA?

So there is a couple of questions off the top of my head and perhaps
there is a more crucial modification that I need to make but don't
yet know of it. Perhaps JAWS will work with VISTA out of the box,
so to speak, but given past experience, I doubt it very much.

Looking forward to lots of advice.

Best wishes.

Andy.
