Thanks for this. One last question though. what technology does Guide use
to offer hands-free access? on the website it says that DragoN Naturally
Speaking version 9 Standard is used but you only recommend a PC of 512 MB of
RAM as a minimum. My experience suggests that this is really not enough for
Dragon Naturally Speaking and that in reality, 1 GB of RAM is needed at
least.
How well does this work and is it released yet? When I speak text it says
the text is "played back" in the explanation on the website. Does this mean
the text is spoken back to you as you dictate using synthetic speech? This
is broadly the approach taken by programs such as J-Say from T and T
Consultancy and it seems to work quite well.

Feel free to fire away with questions, I will answer where I can. Just
remember it's early in the morning and I havent drank enough coffee yet

I would always configure an anti-virus client to automatically deal with
a threat. AVG is great for this ! I don't suppose theres any real need
to be told about a threat or a big message waiting on screen for you to
deal with. There are other anti-virus packages out there which are very
zealous and display pop ups all the time. I would much rather have my
anti-virus just deal with the problem and let me get on with what I was
doing. I would advise to configure the anti virus software to do just
this.
We are working at the option of controlling such pop ups as it has been
a common question lately. We will point the focus of Guide to the anti
virus package and read out the display just as a screen reader would. We
have a similar feature in Guide which does the same with the printer to
help the user when the printer jams or runs out of ink etc. If the
printer shows a window then Guide will become a scrteenreader for that
window.
You can use alt tab as normal if Guide is set to not take over the
desktop. This is a feature within Guide which allows you to minimise
Guide just like any ordinary application and use any of the other
applications running on your computer. Then just jump back into Guide
when you wish.
We are going to develop a better type tutor into Guide as currently it
only has a basic keyboard practice. We have just released a 'hands free'
version of Guide though which takes away the keyboard and mouse
altogether and allows full running of Guide with voice commands alone.
I will have a dig about and see if I can find a decent type tutor to
recommend.

What happens by the way if an email does contain a virus. Will the user
know about the AVG alert that comes up or will they need sighted
assistance?
Presumably, it is impossible to alt tab out of guide once you are in it.
Also, many older people may not have knowledge of the keyboard. Is
there
any plan to develop a typing tutor or is there one you would suggest?

Configuring an existing internet account is really easy. Theres a
setting within guide which detects available internet connections on
your machine and you just select the appropriate one to use. We can
supply our own broadband connection which is a new feature although you
can use any.
If you purchase a complete computer package from ourselves then we would
install a dial-up internet connection which can be used at any time with
no contract, or we could configure it to the users broadband connection
if one exists.
The same goes with email. You can setup your existing email account into
guide or import an existing outlook account, or we could configure a new
email account for you. Theres also a remote support option built into
Guide which can allow us to do all of this for you if the user wishes.
All of the systems we build will come with an internet connection and
email address ready installed so the computer is ready to surf the web
and send emails as soon as its up and running. All firewalls and
anti-virus are setup also.
Guide will be accompanied with a couple of help discs in an audio format
which are chapter related detailing the features and giving detailed
instructions on using each feature, including setting up internet and
email accounts.
We also have a technical department who can readily assist any technical
difficulties.

how is a new user supposed to configure guide to work with their email?
Can
this be done with a computer so that in reality Guide is ready to use on

Hi Trace.
I am familiar with Guide and it can be used in conjunction with
microsoft applications. Guide can convert files from one form to
another, so for example you could get Guide to read out a document
produced by someone using a different application, like Microsoft Word.
You can not use outlook express directly but you can import all of your
outlook express details and contacts and use your original email address
within Guide. Guide then sends and receives just like any another email
client.
I would say that Guide is a friendly environment where you can email,
write documents, scan and read books, burn music cd's, listen to
podcast, surf the internet and much much more. Guide also assists the
user with 2 real speech voices and numerous help pages.
It does use it's own environment and a nice simple menu driven program
to navigate you into various functions and applications. All of the
screens colours, fonts, sizes etc are also totally customizable to the
user.
I would not say that Guide is a complete screen reader as it will only
read out within Guide. Although it has it's own web browser so happily
reads the internet as well as emails, documents and pages of text from a
scanner to name a few.
It does take the stresses and concerns of windows away from the user and
you can literally read an email or get onto the internet with 2 or 3 key
strokes.
