The only way to turn the screen off is to lock the computer as far as I know.
I have sometimes wanted to do this, locking the computer does for me but
turning the screen off for normal operation I do not think is possible.

No, but you can turn the brightness down to 0%. You can do this in the main
Power Options task pain.
