No offence, but it's a non-starter if RNIB take it over.  George, throw
your hat in the ring and give us some ideas.  I reckon there is enough
equipment out there to be donated to this project, but where to store
it, who facilitates it, and where should any proceeds go if there are
any?

Ah, Jackie, we're all getting sentimental now, aren't we!

We mustn't forget those older wind up clocks and watches either!

I used my teletext for ages too but don't see much point now that there
are so many other ways of getting up-to-date news and information.

Well, a number of people want all this historical stuff stored somewhere
...

It could make RNIB some money if they had an exhibition room, now,
couldn't it!  With drinks served and a shop ...

Ah! Carol! Eureka! My love affair with her started after the BBC
Master. She was just awesome, even though the alarm would wake the
dead!!

For me, the two phrases she said that used to crack me up
were: "Please press any key to retrieve", and "No dial tone".  It
wasn't just the phrases that made me laugh, but more the way she said
them.  She sounded quite animated for the first one, like she was
pleased to oblige you. But the second?  Well she sounded sad when she
announced there was no dial tone.  I thought she was brilliant, and
even my mum loved her. She'd say: "Jack, get that Eureka thing to tell



me when such and such was born".

I worked with Eureka between 1989 and 1996, when I took the plunge and



went to Windows.  But I also had a DOS machine during the Eureka
years, with all the delights of Wordperfect, Hal 4/Hal 5, and the
scary moments we all had when learning new things.

Them were the days.  Now, for me, it's definitely the joy of using a
mobile with all the jokes I receive, and getting a lot out of the
K-NFB Reader, which really is helpful and a tool I wouldn't like to be



without now.

I must also add that, somewhere in the days of the above was my
beloved Talking Teletext, or Mr Porty as he became known.  Mine gave
up the ghost a while back, but I managed to buy a second-hand brand
new one off someone some months back, and I have to say I use it every



day.
It's still one of my favourite gadgets.


Reading through everyone's posts about past technology has been a joy
and interesting.  Please can we somehow rescue old equipment and have
it put somewhere that people can visit so that it isn't completely
lost forever?

Once I get dressed in the morning, it's my faithful old Braille

watch

that has to go over my wrist.  I've had this particular watch since
Christmas 1995, and I still love it to bits.
I once left it in the pocket of my skirt, and it ended up in the
washing-machine, but it miraculously survived!
I've got a couple of spare Braille watches as they seem to be on the



demise, but they rule in my book.  I can't

abide

talking watches! (smile).

And my metal Dymo gun I bought from George years ago is still a
personal favourite as well for labelling CDs, folders in my filing
cabinet

... I

wouldn't be without it either! Some of the oldest gadgets still
remain the simplest and best to use!

I agree about the dymo gun!

I use dymo tape with a one line metal braille writing guide to
braille labels for CDs CD roms etc.

I have been through a fair few watches/clocks in my time but one I
still have is a manual "braille" clock going back!

The only thing about it nowadays is say you want it to "go off" at
seven then you will have to set it for 3.30!  *smile*

Don't laugh too loudly  though, it still serves it's purpose well
when I need to fall back on it, believe me!

It's still "alive and kickin" when all the others have long stopp
a-tickin!

I don't use my perkins much nowadays but it has its uses for things
like labelling cds.  I know there's the dymo gun, but I like to use
all the contractions available to me and of course the dymo gun
doesn't have them all.  I did try with the dymo tape and adaptor but



the tape used to fall through no matter how tight I pulled it, so
dots didn't come out very



well for me.  I use the sticky back plastic sheets and get someone
to



cut

the

lines out for me then I cut the labels.  I write as many words as I
can on each line.  that may be a few album titles or just 1.

I still have my old tandy talking clock.  It's 25 years old or so
and I guess if I put batteries in it should still work.  I don't
though as it takes 3.
quaint and dated though it may sound, I love it.  I used to have
the sharp talking calculator, the 1 with the alarm and timer and
all that on it.  would love to have 1 of those again, plus the
Sharp talking clock and the Vox talking watch, though I bet there's



few of those left.

were so fragile.
