My talking teletext has given up the ghost. I don't think I will get another one as the digital switch over in this area is due in 2011. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Cairns" <jackie.cairns@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi David

Ian remembers the Lavender very well. As for more than one Talking Teletext ... Well therein lies a long story I shall not relate here. Suffice it to say that those I had truly died, but, as posted in another message, I've acquired another one, so all is well there! (smile).

I still have my old Eureka somewhere and I bet Jackie has more than one Talking Teletext.

I also may still have a rather plasticky braille machine called a Lavender.
Who remembers those?

Such a conversation about a possible access tech museum is being debated on the BCAB list today Carol. I really think that such a display or museum is a winner if people are prepared to give up any access technology they no longer want, and would like to see being displayed somewhere. I bet each of us has something we could donate?

Well, George has already given me the best laugh about Louis Wolfson, Jackie! I didn't think too much either but was persuaded to buy his product once the tapes were available, supposedly to back up the machine. He didn't tell me how many times they'd just fail! I lived very near to where he was living at that time and someone told him about me ... so I got caught!
<Grins>

Then of course there was the Libra which never went for very long without braille cells giving trouble ... and that poor guy would travel miles to try to oblige ... I didn't know until very late on that he'd gone bust either! (The case of the Libra was good though and I still have it! Oh, what's more, DR DOS on that machine did things DOS never did!)

Mike's just shouting Versabraille at me. He was a great fan!

Hey, anyone want to make money by collecting these things and making a museum available for people to visit! <Grins>

Now I'd best stop my input to this thread or I just dare not tell you what I think George might do! ...

Hi Carol

I remember the BrailleWriter, or whatever it was called, with the
toilet roll holder on the back as I crudely named it! (smile). Didn't
think much of the guy who supported it though ... Lewis Woolfson or
something?

Ah! What about the old handframe??? Come on folks, some of us can
still do that when we want to!

I really thought the BBC and its word processor was good for its time
...
Oh, then that Braillewriter. The one good thing with that was its
little onboard printer - excelllent for a printed shopping list to put
quickly into someone's hand!

Many years ago I used an Optacon every day of my working life. It was
hard labour using it to read a video display unit and of course it
was impossible to type and read at the same time. However, having
said that, I wouldn't have been able to do my job at that time
without it. Iain

Funnily enough, on the BCAB list, they've been talking about
Braillen print machines. But now the subject has moved on.
Does this phrase ring any bells for anyone, baring in mind it wount
sound right.

"Ready master."

That's what the thread's moved onto, the Vincent workstation. I
used this so much in my primary school days.
One more thing I've mentioned on that list. Did anyone own or use a
Brother AX20 which had the speech box attached? I got 1 and as an
immature 9 year old used to love to get it to swear. But the
funniest one was its pronunciation of Hazel, Hazzel.
lastly, who learned to use the Opticon? I tried and failed
miserably with it. I actually had to train 2 fingers as my index
finger had some sort of injury when I first started. Just as well
that I did though. My fingers were just too sensative to the pins
and they used to hurt after a while. I wasn't very good at tracking
with the camera either, and some lettters were difficult to decipher
as well. was glad to give it up.
they cost £3000, and those not in the know were convinced they'd be
great when shopping etc. My parents had to go through charities to
get 1, and that was true for the AX20 too. Jill.

I don't use my perkins much nowadays but it has its uses for things
like labelling cds. I know there's the dymo gun, but I like to use
all the contractions available to me and of course the dymo gun
doesn't have them all. I did try with the dymo tape and adaptor
but the tape used to fall through no matter how tight I pulled it,
so dots didn't come out very well for me. I use the sticky back
plastic sheets and get someone to cut the lines out for me then I
cut the labels. I write as many words as I can on each line.
that may be a few album titles or just 1.
I still have my old tandy talking clock. It's 25 years old or so
and I guess if I put batteries in it should still work. I don't
though as it takes 3.
quaint and dated though it may sound, I love it. I used to have
the sharp talking calculator, the 1 with the alarm and timer and
all that on it. would love to have 1 of those again, plus the
Sharp talking clock and the Vox talking watch, though I bet
there's few of those left. They were so fragile. Jill.

Hi All,

I'm intrigued with recent posts re technology on lists which have
assisted us over the last while!

This kind of question has , in different approaches appearred on
other listts also!

Trust that George is with this.

The good old Perkins has stood the test of time!

Great machine and it is/has beenng upgraded!

Great product!

Any other product or device which stands the test of time
"technology related" it would bee glad to hear about!
Let's not forget before!

Simple and swift reply!

Many thanks

Tony
