Mary, have fun! <BG>

I'm keeping this Wally as a treasured possession, in the hopes I never
need to do it.

Incidentally, what's this all about? (Here's just one line from your
post):

1.=A0On the Windows taskbar, click Start > My Compute.

Those =A0 were as bad as a stuck recording! <SMILE>

I think everyone's trying to send me round the twist today <SMILE>

I've just received no less than 26 copies of one message, 14 of another
and 6 of another . . .. I'm off to NTL right now!

Mary, all the best with your endeavours. Let us know if it works.

Mary

I'm not sure if this will help but you can try the following. It =
deletes the settings files for live update, but don't worry after you've
done this, = when you run live update it will automatically recreate the
settings file it needs.

I'm suggesting these steps in case your settings files are corrupted in
= some way.

Note there are two parts to this so you'll need to carry out part two =
as well before running live update again.

To delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files in Windows XP
1.=A0On the Windows taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
2.=A0On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3.=A0On the View tab, under Files and Folders folder, uncheck Hide file
extensions for known file types. 4.=A0Uncheck Hide protected operating
system files. 5.=A0Under "Hidden files and folders" folder, click Show
hidden files = and folders. 6.=A0If you see a warning message, click
Yes. 7.=A0Click Apply. 8.=A0Click OK. 9.=A0Click Start > Search.
10.=A0Click All files and folders. 11.=A0In the "All or part of the file
name" box, type--or copy and = paste--the
following:

*SETTINGS.LIVEUPDATE
12.=A0Verify that "Look in" is set to Local Hard Drives or to (C:).
13.=A0Click More advanced options. 14.=A0Check Search system folders.
15.=A0Check Search subfolders. 16.=A0Check Search hidden files and
folders. 17.=A0Click Search. 18.=A0When the files are found, on the Edit
menu, click Select All. The files that are found and selected should
look similar to this =
picture:

Wally's note: the file name will be something like =
1settings.liveupdate, 2settings.liveupdate etc.

19.=A0On your keyboard, press Delete.
If you are asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Wally's note: I suggest you carry out stage two as recommended.

Step 2: Set LiveUpdate to run in Interactive Mode
This step is optional but recommended. LiveUpdate has two modes: =
Interactive Mode and Express Mode. *=A0In Interactive Mode, you select
which updates you want to install = when you run LiveUpdate. *=A0In
Express Mode, LiveUpdate automatically downloads and installs = all
available updates for your Symantec products and components.

Because deleting the Settings.LiveUpdate files resets LiveUpdate to use
Express Mode, if you want to use Interactive Mode, you need to make a =
small change in settings.

To change LiveUpdate to Interactive mode
List of 4 items (contains 1 nested list)
1.=A0Do one of the following, depending on your version of Windows:
*=A0In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.
2.=A0Double-click Symantec LiveUpdate. If you are using Windows XP and
you do not see the Symantec LiveUpdate = icon, first click Switch to
classic view. 3.=A0On the General tab, click Interactive mode.
4.=A0Click OK.

Hi George,

Thanks for your help yesterday. I went to the Symantec site and =
upgraded my live update engine from 1.9 to 2.5 as they suggested on the
site. I = went back to live update and this time received the following
error message

LU1899: LiveUpdate could not update this product or component. If this
problem persists please visit the Symantec Support web site for more
information

Which I did but could not find a single thing out about this particular
problem. The search was returned with no results found for this =
problem. I have sent an email to Symantec support, but if previous
times are = anything to go by, I do not expect a reply.

Any more ideas from anyone?

Regards

Mary
