No worries pal. I found the message that Tristram sent in the archive and I'm copying it at the end. It explains why the disabling is needed. I don't know about S&S support policy, sorry.

Now what I did:-

I have 9 different drivers in Sound, Video and Game Controllers. The one that had to be disabled was "ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio - ATI AA01". I didn't want to experiment by disabling any of the 9 drivers; I was worried that I might lose the speech output all together and get stuck. So if you have a sighted help around, or you use brail display you'll be probably alright to experiment with the sound and video drivers. With Tristram's explanation below I reckon you'll figure it out on your own if one of the drivers is causing the problem that is.

Snip starts-

"[jaws-uk] Re: Jaws not speaking at start up

The problem revolves around a graphic adaptor which also has an audio
adaptor built into it. The connection between computer is HDMI and
sound can be trasmitted down this type of connection so it is most
convenient if hooking up a large display for watching HD movies to have
this arrangement on the assumption that the display also has some
speakers. The audio adaptor on the video card was causing JAWS to go
through it when no audio output was likely to be heard at the other end,
there being no output device.

We hadn't come across a graphic adaptor like this before at S&S however
we decided that since, in a normal computing context this extra audio is
not required in addition to the regular soundcard the most effective
solution was to disable the secondery audio adaptor. I don't think this
is likely to be a very common problem for now."

Snip ends.

Amro

Sorry, I'm at university now, so won't use Skype till I've left. Nor will my friend.

Chris, do you use Skype? I'm behind my computer now - if you like we can have a quick chat and see if I can shed some light... email off list.

Cheers,

Well, Hannah does in fact have a RealtTek HD Audio driver. Would S&S deal with issues even if she's only using it in 40 minute mode?

Chris, I had a similar issue and it turned out that an HD driver of one of the sound and video controllers was interfering. Disabling that driver sorted it out. William of S&S was the one who cracked it. I posted an email with the details to the Jaws-UK list in early September or it might have been very late August. Tristram from S&S commented with further details on my email too. Sorry I no longer have those emails but you could check the list's archive or write to S&S if they are your dealer.

Amro

Hi all, my friend's got an Acer Aspire 5720 laptop running Vista Home Premium. She can't get her JAWS 9 to speak at the log on screen, even if "Start JAWS at the log on screen" is checked. Is this her machine, or has anyone else experienced this problem, because I can't duplicate it here. All comments and queries would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
