Roger I turned off the video and that stopped the hissing. Then last might I 
set up Skype on my NC10 and interestingly there was no hiss on the video on 
that one so I did not disable it there.

I thought I did as well until the BT engineer found an extension bell was 
connected via a jack socket so needed a filter. Installed and problem 
solved.
