[access-uk] Re: Sight Village

It occurs to me that potentially that Could be of help to people who need to format and reload their pc. Do you think it would handle that? Would it also read LED displays on synths, etc?

Jackie,

I think this would be a good opportunity for the gadget show to test and show to the world, what is available for the blind community. Another good test for this equipment would be to strap the phone to a paintball gun, equip everyone with a T shirt, with their name on and see just how effective the equipment really is.
There you are, blind paintball!
Anyone wanna go?

All

I'm happy to compare SiRecogniser with K-Reader from purely a personal perspective in terms of usability, simply because I am interested in both. I sincerely hope one day to see SiRecogniser if I can manage to do so. But I'm not entering into any battle or dual as I think these things can be unprofessional and a bit childish to be frank. I am sure they both have their place, and it will be interesting to see how each develops.

Dave,

I really must resubscribe to Infotech!!

Main problem for me is wasn't able to make it to sight Village this year as have just come home from training with my new guide dog.

Still I'm sure the discussion will rumble on...

Thanks,

Phil

Hi all,

Well I have to tell you, Brian and Terry of T&T, have tested the Si recogniser, and were very impressed, and also the early version of the K reader, not the phone version! and were not impressed at all. These reports maybe available to those who subscribe to InfoTech.

Jackie, I have seen the Si recogniser in action at sight village last year, and it is indeed very impressive, and you'd like the nice Italian man who sells it too lol. I'm waiting for it to become available on a mobile phone and then it will depend on price as to whether or not I buy one.

Cheers

Dave

Hi jackie / Steve,

Very interesting thread this...but taking up George's earlier suggestion about a "battle of.." approach, what about seeing if someone like Brian Hartjen would be interested in doing a comparison for infotech or the T & T podcast....or better still what about teaming up to do a workshop / "battle of" at the RNIB Techshare conference if they're having one this November, I seem to remember Brian and Terry did such a thing for pacmate vs Braillenote.

Anyway just a suggestion...!

Cheers,

Phil

Ah! Steve me boy! I work now, like you, so I can't just come over to you at an exhibition and hang around while you demo stuff to a throng of waiting hopefuls. (smile). I'd love to see SiRecogniser in action, and bring the K-Reader to compare it, purely out of interest I have to say, not to be smug about it. I'm sure they both have different needs for different situations. And it's good to know that there is competition out there to hopefully make both products even better.

That's about as diplomatic as it gets for me. (smile).

Just one comment, I too can take the mini PC to the kitchen. You haven't seen it yet, even now, though I have given you the offer of demos <Smile>.
I still reckon the battle of the readers would be fun.

Hi Steve

I've used it for lots of different things. I've got names off medication packets to differentiate them, and whether I'm opening beans or spaghetti! I agree some of it is tricky to do, but it isn't impossible if you are on your own and need the information. And Steve me boy, it also means I can take the phone into my kitchen and raid the cupboards, not have to cart the produce to the scanner!!!! (smile).

Hi Jackie,

But will K Reader read round corners, like cylinders, bottles, etc? I am genuinely interested, since all I have read about it says that it is designed to read text from paper rather than objects.

Hi Steve

What you do with K-Reader is scan the page again. I go by the degrees relative to the page when I scan. The lower the number, usually the better I've done in taking a picture. You can use the View Report Field, but personally I just shoot and shoot again if necessary. I think it's absolutely fab to be able to have something so portable in my pocket. TALKS

on the phone, reading software, GPS, MP3 player with full track access?
Blimey it's awesome!! Never having seen the SiRecogniser, I wouldn't doubt you for a single minute, but it has a lot of clobber to it that is cumbersome at the moment. As you say, "at the moment".

Hi Orhan,

Basically, to be fair, the main difference is that you have far more
control of the camera with SiRecognizer. For example, if you are
scanning a tin and you don't get good results, you can invert the
video, you can tell Recognizer that you are scanning something
cylindrical, and there are all kinds of pre-filters you can try to get
better results. K-Reader is a kind of snap it and see solution. It
works well, but if you don't get a good scan, you don't have much
control to improve on it.

I am sure Jackie will correct me about that if I am wrong, but there
are nine pre-filter steps you can go through with Recognizer to
improve the results, and it has three built-in scanning engines, which
is why it is not on a phone yet. Too much grunt on the processor
would be required.
Recognizer is undoubtedly the best reading solution for objects out
there, but it is certainly not as portable.

All the best

Steve

Hi All

Can I just thank all those who came to say hello at Sight Village
this
week.
It was lovely to put voices to some very familiar names on the list.

I didn't get much of a chance to wander around because of strutting
my
stuff
on the Sight and Sound stand, but I did have enough time to pop over
to
the
Cobolt stand, and look at their new ITell gadget. For anyone who
doesn't know about this, it is a small device that plugs into the
bottom of an
Ipod
that enables us mortals with little or no sight to use the Ipod with
speech.
I thought this was a really interesting gadget. It doesn't work on
either the Shuffle or Itouch, but all the other models seem to
support it. The only thing that concerns me, however, is how one
would transfer material from their PC to the Ipod if Itunes software
isn't accessible. Perhaps
some
who do this already would like to elaborate as it might potentially
be a stumbling block.

The ITell retails at £59.95 I believe, but I thought it was the most
interesting gadget other than the K-Reader phone, of course! (smile).

Anyone else see anything interesting and "different" this year?

Jackie
