Hi Tristram,
If I should really run scandisk before defragmenting why is scandisk not
included in the system tools in Windows XP.

You should gnerally run scan disk before you defragment as errors that may be
on disk can potentially become disasterously unrecoverable if the operating
system then tries to compact these during the defragment process.
