[access-uk] SatNav maps?

Hi all -

Does anybody know if companies like Tomtom and Garmin all get the maps from the
same place. I understand there are 2 major companies that provide the maps for
the satellites, I think one is called Teleatlas, and can't remember the other
one I've seen somewhere.

I'm asking because I need to update the maps for the in-car Garmin I use, but
this will cost almost as much as the Garmin did, and am wondering if I ditched
the Garmin for a Tomtom, would I still get the same maps. There's nothing wrong
with the Garmin as a piece of hardware, it's just about the most up-to-date
maps. I have read too that maps get updated quarterly, so again will this mean
that all Satnav devices that cover UK and Ireland, have access to the latest
maps, regardless of the manufacturer of the hardware?

Thanks for any clarification -

Andy
